Proverbs 3:5-6 “With all your heart you must trust the LORD and not your own judgment. Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow. ” CEV

I have thoroughly enjoyed Chris's devotionals this past month, and I hope that you have as well. I was planning on writing something about the Identity of the non-believer, but I think there was something Chris didn't say much about, something so basic, fundamental, and bare-bones that it does not really need to be said, or does it?

Last night I had the blessing to work in a fog. No, not a fog in my head, but an honest-to-goodness fog, a low lying pile of aerated water covering the land like icing covers a cake, and just as thick as well!. In this fog, where the visibility was measured in feet rather than yards (and in inches towards morning) I was bemused by the lights in the darkness. One light would consistently swept over me, the airport beacon shining with all its might, sweeping through the cloud, the light playing over the eddies and currents in the fog. This light, despite the thickness of the fog shone out, alerting all to the presence of the airport there. I could not see the source of the light, but I could see the very path the light took as it made its regular rounds. I could not see farther than the faint outline of the buildings around me as they disappeared into the mist, but throughout the night, that beacon blazed a trail that all could see.

What does this dark night and sweeping light and our identity in Christ have in common? We stand, each and every one of us, at the brink of the darkness. Our sole support and true encouragement is this beaming light whose source we cannot see. We have just enough light to see one or two steps ahead of us and no further. The only thing which keeps us from stepping into the darkness is this vagrant light holding the darkness around us at bay. We as believers must trust God, our light to show us the path. We as believers are marked by our faith and trust. We must have absolute trust and absolute surrender, this is the source of our identity in Christ. When the light has passed us by and we no longer can see in front of us, yet we hear His voice calling “Forward, go forward!” We must listen and decide do we trust enough to obey? When we do, we have only taken a step or two and the light shines again to illuminate the next step and then it is gone. Again we are given the choice to hold or to obey and strike forward.

This is the identity of the believer: unconditional faith, supreme surrender, and total trust. Christ leads us and breaks the trail. He just asks us to follow despite our doubts, fears, and questions. He calls us to follow inspite of our stumbles, our trips, our falls, our failures, and even our sins. Can we claim this trust? Have we unqualifingly surrendered? Ask Him and He will show you Truth. Come, let's follow Him on this adventure that is our lives! Its worth every scrape and bump we will experience!

I want Jesus to walk with me,
I want Jesus to walk with me;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

In my trials, Lord, walk with me;
In my trials, Lord, walk with me;
When my heart is almost breaking,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me;
When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me;
When my head is bowed in sorrow,
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.
